Youth and Government
The YMCA Youth and Government program is offered at thirteen area high schools and
one middle school. The Youth and Government program provides students the opportunity
to learn about and participate in the democratic process. Students participate in
their individual clubs throughout the school year, coming together for regional
workshops, district conferences and the State Conference is held each year at the
State Capitol. During the State Conference, congressional delegates occupy the House
and Senate Chambers of the Capitol while they present and debate proposed legislation
they have personally sponsored. Judicial delegates utilize the Supreme Court and
Appellate courtrooms to lead and participate in mock trials. A news media crew establishes
a communications center for message delivery and newspaper publishing throughout
the 2 ½ day conference. The opportunity to share this experience with new friends
from around the state provides a unique experience for all who participate.
Currently, Youth and Government clubs are active at Putnam City West, Moore, Westmoore,
Capitol Hill, Classen School for Advanced Studies, Star Spencer, Guthrie, Millwood,
Edmond Santa Fe, Santa Fe South, Northeast Academy, Bishop McGuinness, Deer Creek
and Brink Jr. High School. Call your local YMCA for more information.
