How do you build a Strong Kid
“I am the legal guardian of my 14-year-old grandson, an autistic child. He is also a borderline diabetic and desperately needs to exercise. I knew I could not afford to pay for a gym membership, but I brought him to the YMCA anyway.
The staff told me about the Strong Kids program and how it could help my grandson. They helped me apply for a scholarship and facilitated the entire process. As I watched the fitness staff work with my grandson, my eyes teared up and I had to step out into the hall to compose myself.
My grandson now comes in almost every day to work with the fitness staff. They help him with his workout and cardiovascular exercise so that he can lose some weight, keeping diabetes at bay.”
How do you build a Strong Family
“I am a single father of four young boys. I lost my wife about eight months ago in a car accident. At first I didn’t know what to do, but the five of us are taking each day as a gift and trying to make every day special. My children are slowly but surely recovering from the trauma of losing their Mother.
I think coming to a place where they can release their daily stresses helps them tremendously. I am trying to make ends meet just like everyone else. My wife was the greatest stay-at-home Mother, but because I still have to pay the bills, I have to work.
As a child I was fortunate enough to grow up with the YMCA. As a matter of fact, my wife and I met at a YMCA in another state. I hope to provide my children with the same experiences I had. I want them to be able to play sports and meet new friends. I am so grateful for the YMCA and their ability to help us during this difficult time.”
Your gift to the Strong Kids Campaign provides access for families like this one to the YMCA’s childcare and wellness programs. You renew their hope.
How do you build a Strong Community
“While en route to meet me at Fort Irwin, California, my wife and three daughters were stranded twelve hours at Will Rogers World Airport due to a flight cancellation. While searching for a USO, they found instead your organization, the Military Welcome Center.
According to my wife, she and our girls were warmly welcomed and your friendly volunteers went above and beyond to see they were fed and comfortable during their long wait. Through conversation with your volunteers, she learned about, and was impressed with, the founding and mission of the Military Welcome Center. We believe it is a great thing you are doing and commend your efforts. I want to thank you for the kindness and consideration shown my family while in your company. You made what was a trying time less stressful.”
