Swim Lessons (6 - 12yrs)

Classes are 40 minutes in length.

Stages 1-3 include swim basics curriculum in which students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skill sets:

  1. Swim, float, swim sequencing (front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide) and exiting the pool
  2. Jump, push, turn, grab

Stages 4-6 include swim strokes curriculum where students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

Stage 1

The curriculum for stage 1 introduces front/back glides, freestyle & backstroke and submerging the face. The goal of Stage 1 is to have the child submerge the face, kick feet and scoop arms proficiently and demonstrate knowledge of all skills introduced in the class.

Requirements: Participant must be at least 6 years old. No prior skills needed, class is for beginners. 

Children with a tendency to run and leave the class will need a parent standing by to bring the child back. Additionally, children who do not listen to the instructor’s commands or refuse to participate, will need a parent nearby to reinforce the child to listen and participate.

Parents of children under 8 years old must remain in the pool area during the swim lessons.

Stage 2

The curriculum for this stage follows stage 1, in performing front/back glides, freestyle & backstroke but with the face in the water and for a longer distance. Treading water is also introduced.
The goal of Stage 2 is to learn to swim freestyle & backstroke with the face in independently.

Requirements: Must be at least 6 years old and be able to submerge face and head under water. If swimmer cannot put face under water, they will be removed from the class.

Children with a tendency to run and leave the class will need a parent standing by to bring the child back. Additionally, children who do not listen to the instructor’s commands or refuse to participate, will need a parent nearby to reinforce the child to listen and participate.

Parents of children under 8 years old must remain in the pool area during the swim lessons.

The goal of Stage 3 is to proficiently swim freestyle & backstroke for 10-15 yards independently and tread water for 1 minute.

Requirements: Must be at least 6 years old, be able to submerge face and head under water and swim unassisted on front and back.

Children with a tendency to run and leave the class will need a parent standing by to bring the child back. Additionally, children who do not listen to the instructor’s commands or refuse to participate, will need a parent nearby to reinforce the child to listen and participate.

Stage 4

The curriculum for this stage enhances freestyle by adding rotary breathing, backstroke, treading water, knee dives and introduces breastroke. The goal of Stage 4 is to proficiently swim freestyle with rotary breaths, backstroke, breaststroke and tread water.

Requirements: Must be at least 7 years old, able to submerge face under water, float unassisted on front and back and swim unassisted 10-15 yards (half the pool length) on front and back. If swimmer fails to meet the requirements, they will be removed from the class. Participants who are 6 years old and have a passing progress report from youth stage 3 may register.

Children who do not listen to the instructor’s commands or refuse to participate, will need a parent nearby to reinforce the child to listen and participate.
Parents of children under 8 years old must remain in the pool area during the swim lessons.

Stage 5 & 6

The curriculum for stage 5, enhances endurance, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, treading water and introduces butterfly and sidestroke. The goal of Stage 5 is to swim the four main strokes for 50 yards, tread for two minutes and swim sidestroke for 25 yards.

The curriculum for stage 6, enhances endurance, freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, butterfly, sidestroke, treading water and introduces elementary backstroke and flip turns.
The goal of Stage 6 is to swim the four main strokes, sidestroke & elementary backstroke for more than 50 yards, tread water and perform flip turns.

Requirements: Must be at least 8 years old, able to submerge face under water, float unassisted on front and back, swim unassisted 50 yards on front and back and perform 25 yards of breaststroke and butterfly. If participant does not meet the prerequisites above, they will be removed from the class. Participants who are 7 years old and have a passing progress report from youth stage 4 or 5 may register.
