YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City
The YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City is now accepting participants for GETTING AHEAD, an initiative offered by the Y as a space for those struggling to make ends meet.
Getting Ahead is a 16-week discussion-based class for anyone who identifies as being in poverty or struggles with just getting by. This free 16-week program will help you set your own goals for life, build a network of support, and discover resources to create a more stable environment for you and your family.

What to Expect:

  • One class per week for 16 weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6.
  • Buffet-style dinner for the whole family at 5:30 p.m. and class from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Free child care during class.
  • A graduation ceremony at the end of the 16-week course.
  • Free membership to the Y for one year.
  • You will receive a $25 program stipend.

What are Getting Ahead Participants Saying:

“I really think the greatest moments for me as a facilitator take place outside the meeting space. When relationships forged in meeting play out in real life!”

“Without a program like Getting Ahead, many available programs go unused because people simply do not know they exist.”

“I will continually sing the praises of the Getting Ahead program to anyone who will listen and encourage everyone to go through the program.”

Help Your Neighbors Get Ahead

Fighting poverty is a team effort. The YMCA is recruiting compassionate individuals who have a desire to work with those in our community who need a hand up.

The Y is looking for class facilitators to work with adults and youth facilitators to work with school-aged children in the Getting Ahead classes under the Bridges Out of Poverty program.

Getting Ahead classes will be held at multiple YMCA locations at various times. Classes are 16 weeks and meet for 3 hours each week. Each position will receive a stipend for their time.
