THUNDER BASKETBALL?
YMCA Thunder Basketball League not only teaches technical skills, but it’s also an opportunity for kids to make new friends and just have fun!
DEVELOPMENTAL
LEAGUE
AGES 3 – 16
Our Developmental League has an emphasis on the development and understanding of the game of basketball. Officials will be more lenient and assist in teaching the rules during the game. The winter season consists of 8 games and summer season consists of 6 games. For ages 5 & up, our youth basketball league is gender specific. Age groups may be combined, depending on registration.
SPIRIT
LEAGUE
AGES 8 – 12
Our Spirit League has been developed for players and teams with advanced skills to play at the YMCA against competition of the same development. This league will be closely officiated by certified referees. The winter season consists of 8 games and summer season consists of 6 games. Both seasons include an end of season tournament. The Spirit League is open for children ages 8-12. This league is gender specific. Age groups may be combined, depending on registration.

17 and under; 18 and up
Our Champions League is designed for children and adults with impairments or disabilities. Guided by dedicated coaches, athletes of all abilities come together to experience the joy of basketball, fostering friendships and building confidence.
There are two divisions within the Champions League – 17 and under and 18 and up.
VOLUNTEER
By spending a couple hours each week with your team, you have the ability to make a lifelong impact on a child. Volunteer coaches at the Y instill positive values and help kids develop healthy habits that extend far beyond the playing field.

If you do not hear from your coach by November 14, you can email communications@ymcaokc.org, and we will put you in contact with the right person. Please include your child’s name and which location you registered with.
The Y encourages parents or guardians of athletes to volunteer as coaches. You can sign up as a coach during the registration process or by submitting an application through Volunteer Matters | Volunteer Registration (volunteermatters.org).
Games are on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and/or Sunday afternoons. Game days vary depending on division and location.
Practices will be held at the Y, but the practice date varies by team. Check with your coach after Nov. 14 for your child’s team’s practice schedule.
Practices will start the week of Nov. 18 or the week of Dec. 2, depending on the location you are registered for. More information to come.
There are eight games in the winter season.
The schedule will be released by Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. The season will begin the weekend of Dec. 6. There won’t be any practices or games Dec. 23 through Jan. 6. The season will end Feb. 16.

No, you do not have to be a YMCA member to register, though household members do save around $100 per child each sports season.
In addition to the official jersey, we recommend non-marking athletic shoes, a basketball and shorts/athletic pants.
Yes, the jersey is a requirement to play in the YMCA Thunder Basketball League. The shorts are optional. If you purchased a jersey for the 2023-2024 season and it still fits your child, you do not need to buy a new one. You can pick up a jersey at your local Y or order online at ymcathunderbasketballleague.com.
Since we have no way to guarantee a uniform has not been worn, they are not refundable or returnable.
