YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City
This Tuesday, May 14, marks a significant milestone for the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City as it celebrates its 135th anniversary. Established less than one month after the Oklahoma Land Run in 1889, the YMCA has remained committed to serving the local community and building healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

“For 135 years, the YMCA has been a cornerstone of our community. It stands as a testament to our founders and their vision for what the Y could be to us all,” said Kelly Kay, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City.

Originally founded as a refuge for young men seeking work opportunities in a new and growing city, the Y quickly evolved into a place of positivity, offering spiritual guidance amidst the challenges of the time. Today, its impact extends far beyond its initial scope, reaching individuals of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life.

In 2023, the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City served nearly a quarter million individuals from communities across central and western Oklahoma and provided over $2.8 million in financial assistance for memberships and programs. Throughout the state, almost 6,000 men, women and teens selflessly volunteered over 100,000 hours, embodying the spirit of service and community engagement.

“As we celebrate our 135th anniversary, we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to carry on the legacy of the Y,” said Kay. “Together, we empower individuals, strengthen families, and nurture communities. My hope is the Y will continue to do so for many generations to come.”

For over a century, the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City has exemplified the power of community, embodying the spirit of service and compassion. As it looks toward the future, the Y remains committed to its enduring mission of building a better world, one life at a time.

Join us in commemorating this milestone at a come-and-go celebration at the Association Office (500 N. Broadway, Ave., Suite 500, Oklahoma City) on Wednesday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mr. Kay will be available for interviews from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
To celebrate this special occasion with the community, the Y is offering a heavily discounted joining fee the week of May 13-17. Community members can join for $18.89 using code SINCE1889. Those interested in joining can visit ymcaokc.org/join for more information.
